Things to do in Koh Yao Yai
Welcome dear traveler to Koh Yao Yai!
I hope you have nicely settled down in your comfy accommodation and now it's time to plan what to do in Koh Yao Yai. I am sure you have not much time to spare so let's dive into it.
Koh Yao does not have wonderful waterfalls, big statues, big temples nor big mosque. This part of your holiday should be more about activities connected with Thai nature beauty, underwater marine life and exploring traditional island lifestyle. Close your eyes and imagine that you are in Koh Samui 1987. Now open in it and welcome to Koh Yao Yai - one of the last unspoilt inhabited islands. Oh yes, muslim religion prevails here with 95%.
So what can you do in Koh Yao Yai or from Koh Yao Yai? Ask me again.
Let me divide activities in two categories.
Water activities, snorkeling, boat trips
PADI Discover Scuba Diving - this is 1 day try diving program/course with personal instructor. It takes about 6 hours with the pool session first and two open water dives. Koh Yao is very well located and only 20 minutes from Top5 dive sites of Thailand, namely SharkPoint and Anemone reef. You dont need any previous experience nor any license. I think this is amazing holiday activity that can change your life. Many people try diving once and then can't stop. Yes I am diver as well :)
Phi Phi Islands Snorkeling Trip - since there are not much great opportunities to snorkel around Koh Yao I encourage you to join snorkeling tour to Phi Phi Islands. Elixir Divers provide not only diving but also non-diving tours by their own comfy well equipped speedboats with marine toilet, which is rare in other companies. Visit amazing places, take photos of breathtaking scenic views and explore underwater coral reefs and fish of Andaman sea.
Railay Beach and Poda Islands Trip - different direction, but still very very good snorkeling possibilities offer small archipelago of Poda or Chicken islands. White sandy beaches with crystal clear waters will amaze you. Railay is very famous beach under the limestone cliffs with rock climbing tradition.
James Bond Island Trip - explore Phang Bay with many small limestone islands. One of them is Koh Tapu - famous rock from the movie. Sea kayaking is my favourite part of this trip. Cruise along protected mangrove forests. This trip is not about swimming and snorkeling.
Hong Island Longtail Boat Trip - I recommend to do this trip by traditional wooden longtail boat since the distance from northern pier is not long. Hop in hop off small islands with beautiful beaches. Hong island has nature trail and viewpoint platform that you should walk up the stairs. It is managable for anybody at least decent fit. I support selling this tour with local people, not with resorts. Ask in any counter that you find outside the resort to arrange for you. Payment is in cash then.
Koh Khai Islands - many people offer this trip, but for me it's worthless. Corals are destroyed, too many people on small islands, basically tourist trap and they built many ugly structures over there. I do not support it. You can rent jet ski from the island and just ride around them.
Mainland activities
Mangrove kayaking - get in touch with my friend Coco. He speaks great English and he likes to teach tourists many things including how to produce rubber. Taste his coconuts from his farm. Jump on kayak and explore local fauna and flora along the inland river. Phone and Whatsapp +66 93 747 1978
Elephant Sanctuary Koh Yao Yai - get in touch with this family directly and skip booking via resort. It will save them commission and support those cute elephant on retirement. 2 hour program includes feeding elephant, mud spa, walk with him and bathing with elephant in the small pond. Food is included. Pick up as well if you arrange with them. My friend Nuche she speak good English as well. Phone and Whatsapp +66 94 291 4666
